Cancelling a pet health plan

Cancelling a pet health plan can be more complicated than stopping an ordinary monthly subscription because many plans are annual agreements paid for in monthly instalments. The Direct Debit frequency therefore does not necessarily describe the contractual commitment.

The plans currently tracked by Vets Compared use several different approaches to early cancellation. Some providers require all or part of the remaining subscription to be paid. Others compare what the owner has already paid with the normal price of veterinary services already received and charge an adjustment. Some apply a defined cancellation fee, while more flexible arrangements also exist.

33 current term snapshots use the unknown model, including Pet Health Club Essential and Pet Health Club Plus.

6 current term snapshots use the fee model, including VetPartners Pet Health Plan and Tamar Active Pet Health Club.

6 current term snapshots use the remaining term model, including Garden PetCare Premium and Goddard ProActive Pets.

1 current term snapshot uses the payg reprice model, including Creature Comforts All Access.

These approaches can produce very different outcomes for two owners paying similar monthly prices. An owner who has already used vaccinations, parasite treatment and several consultations may face a larger adjustment under a pay-as-you-go repricing model than somebody who has barely used the plan.

It is also worth checking what happens when circumstances change rather than when the owner simply chooses to cancel. Plans can differ over moving away, changing veterinary practice, rehoming the animal or the death of the pet. Some end the financial commitment in those circumstances, while others may retain some liability under the published terms.

Cooling-off periods can provide a short opportunity to cancel after joining, but services already consumed may still affect the amount refundable. The correct position therefore depends on the specific terms of the plan rather than on the fact that payments are collected monthly.

Vets Compared records the published cancellation model and other material exit terms for each plan where that information is available. Check the current provider terms before cancelling because contractual wording can change.
